Welcome

This page contains information regarding federal jury service at U.S. District Court for the Western District of Kentucky.

Jury service is one of the important civic duties you can perform. The protection of rights and liberties in federal courts largely is achieved through the teamwork of a judge and a jury. We hope you find this process to be an interesting and satisfying experience.

The safety of jurors and other courthouse visitors is the District of Western Kentucky’s highest priority, and the Court continues to follow the guidance of local health authorities during the COVID-19 public health emergency.

Requesting to be excused or postpone your jury service.

Do not wait until you are notified to appear to submit your request.  If you are requesting to be excused for medical reasons, you must submit a doctor’s note.  The court does not accept requests from employers. When we receive your request, we will submit it to a judge for review.  When the judges make a decision, we will notify you in writing.  Jury clerks cannot excuse a juror from serving. Sometimes, the decision on your request may take a few weeks. You may submit your request by mail, by fax, or by e-mail.  Contact information for each office can be found here.

Important Security Information

Please note that the U.S. Marshals will require that you show a valid form of photo identification and wear a mask, in order to enter the building. The court prefers that you leave your phone in your car.  However, if you must carry it with you, it must be turned OFF while in the building. All other electronic equipment and devices are NOT allowed in the Federal Courthouse.

Job Protection

You are protected by Federal Statute, Title 28 U.S.C. Section 1875, from being discharged, intimidated or coerced by your permanent employer because of your Federal Court jury service. Further information is available from the jury office.

Jury Parking

The Court reimburses you for parking fees (with a receipt) and any toll charges incurred. Please take note of the name and address of the parking lot. All reimbursements are made following your juror service. You will not be compensated for taxi fare. Please Note: If you appear for jury service without calling the jury information line, you will not be authorized to collect any jury fees.

Jury Scam Warning

Jury scams have seen a resurgence in recent months. If you receive a phone call or an e-mail from someone claiming to be a court official, DO NOT give them your social security number or credit card information. Our court will never ask for personal information over the phone or by e-mail.

Failure to report for jury service.

Any persons failing to report for jury service that is not excused by the Court may be served with a Show Cause Order. Subsequently, those jurors will be required to show cause why they should not be held in contempt of the Jury Selection Act. Contempt penalties can be at least a $100.00 fine, three days imprisonment, or both. (United States Code 28 Section 1866(g).
