Best Practice: Search Strategies
Use one of three strategies for searching a party on
CM/ECF. Before you do, keep in mind that at this time, CM/ECF
searches are not key word searches but require exact text matches
including, in some cases, articles such as "A" and "The."
• If you know the
party's last name, then enter it. Be sure to use appropriate upper
and lower case characters since the search is case sensitive.
• It may be necessary
to conduct multiple searches. For example, if you are searching
for World Communications, then search on the first word of the
corporation's name. If there are articles in the title such as
"A" or "The," you may or may not need to include
the article in the search. For example a search request for The
Portland Oceanian may not produce a result. But a search
request for Portland Oceanian will be successful. Likewise a search
for Portland Oceanian may not produce a result; but a search for
The Portland Oceanian will be successful. Remember that all searches
are case sensitive, so make sure that your search begins with
an uppercase letter.
• If you do not know
the spelling of a party's last name, then enter the first letter
of the last name. You may end up with a long list of parties whose
last name begins with the letter you searched on. You will then
have to scroll through the list to find your party.
